Wood flooring is classic and adds warmth and charm to any room. However, shopping for the right floor involves more than just choosing a color. Here are our tips to help your shopping experience.
Decide which version you want
Both solid and engineered wood floors look similar on the surface. However, engineered wood construction is different and results in a floor that's more stable and better able to handle water.
Select wood species
Oak is the king of solid hardwood flooring. It stains well, is durable, and has an appealing natural grain.
Other popular domestic species are walnut, hickory, American cherry, maple, and ash. Exotic species are darker and more dramatic, such as Brazilian cherry, ebony, or teak.
1. Consider plank width. Wider planks are more traditional and work well with any decor, from rustic to urban modern.
They can make a room look larger– or sometimes smaller. Best to discuss with one of the experts at our hardwood flooring company.
2. Grain pattern. Logs are cut in three ways. Plain-sawn, the most common, has little waves called cathedrals. Rift-sawn has long, straight grains, while quarter-sawn is a combination of both.
3. Factory (pre) or site finished?
With the factory finished, you'll know just what you are getting. The site finished has many more colors and sheens. In addition, it offers greater possibilities for customization of your wood flooring.
4. Decide the type of finish. They are oil, polyurethane, or hybrid-based ones.
